Easter (important)
There are heaps of Christians that believe this holy day is a day where we celebrate and convict others. They say things like “die to yourself everyday and carry the cross”. And I agree with that statement. But the point of Easter isn’t about saving people or scaring them into believing in Christ.
Luke 9:23
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Now nothing is wrong with the earlier statement. It’s convicting and true. I mean you see it right there in Luke. But as you know most of the time when we look at verses there are multiple interpretations. And God has another perception for that verse. Let’s break it down.
“whoever wants to be my disciple”
- This isn’t for everyone. Some people are new to Jesus, and maybe a little nervous about this relationship. They are struggling to be ok with hearing him let alone being a disciple. This is where we are patient and continue to sow into them rather than jumping down their throat. Love them rather than convict them.
“deny themselves”
- How can someone deny themselves if they don’t know who they are yet? This is journey and a very personal journey at that. So when telling someone this verse be mindful that it’s something very personal, and gentle. It is not something we can throw in someone’s face to convict them.
“take up their cross”
- This is where I see a difference in what most of us think. This statement doesn’t mean carry all of the burden of sin and beat yourself up over how imperfect you are. Everyone is missing a key word! UP! Take UP their cross! This means after you have met Jesus Christ and decided to not only believe in him but live life with him you can then learn who you are so that you may deny yourself. Then you are in a position to lift his beautiful sacrifice with honor and love. That not only do you understand the weight of the cross, but you enjoy that weight and lift it up because there is nothing better in this life. There is nothing more beautiful and spectacular than the Gospel. Dont carry the cross. Die to yourself so that you can lift the cross higher. So that others see him rather than you. It’s not a burden to carry that cross. It’s not a tool to convict our fellow Christians or others. This is something that we are to lift and celebrate. Key word is to lift. Not only carry that cross but exalt its meaning on high! Be proud and share that love with the world!
“follow me”
- Most see this as a command. When I see it as an invitation. How lucky are we? We sit around with our bibles and pick out guidelines and rules. Then we shove those things down the throats of others. We are all missing the point. He doesn’t tell us what to do. He invites us to follow him. He invites us to live a life that is more than a daily struggle to just have another day. He gives us a life that is full of promise and hope.
Why do we continue to attack others and force our beliefs upon them? Why do we think Easter is about how we are to save people? If I remember correctly HE died on the cross to save us. I wasn’t there. I can’t save anyone. Only he can provide that gift for others. I am called to just worship him. And the more I know him the more I want to be like him. It’s never been out of conviction. Its never been something I feel obligated to do. I genuinely want to be like him. He loved so well when I’ve loved so horribly. He was a great friend. And I suck most of the time. So this Easter I urge you to really study and know what it’s about. Because it should be like any other day. You and I should lift up the cross and show the world what it really stands for… LOVE.
1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
